Thursday (Term 1 | Week 10)

Happy Thursday Home and School-based learners!

We are posting our blog early, so home learners can access resources during the school day. For parents of children attending school today, photographs will be added to the blog at the end of the school day, so please check in later to see our learning.

Remember you can visit our new online learning resources page too.

Congratulations to Isabella, who has been working hard practising her reading at home. She has earned the reading award for 50 NIGHTS of reading! This is a fantastic achievement – well done, Bella!

Isabella has also been working at developing her word knowledge and writing skills at home:

Yasha has also been undertaking lots of literacy and numeracy at home. Yesterday she worked on addition of 2 digit numbers and 1 digit numbers, and she is also practising her writing of lower case and uppercase letters. Last night she watched the animated bible story of the events of Holy Week with her mum.

Riaan’s parents have also sent in some photographs of the learning he has been undertaking at home too – well done, Riaan!

If you would like to share any home learning, please do send us photographs and we will be happy to add your child’s learning to the class blog. It’s great to see familiar faces, who are are learning at home.

Here’s Thursday’s learning at school:

SPORT

The children enjoyed an outdoors sport lesson with Mrs Cooymans – their final Sport lesson of Term 1.

NUMERACY: SUBTRACTION

Today the children are learning about subtraction, the inverse operation of addition. We listened to the rhyme ‘Ten Fat Sausages Sizzling in a Pan’. Each time sausages popped and banged, we counters how many were left and completed subtraction number sentences. We noticed some patterns – can you see them too?

Home learners: You could listen to the song and stop the rhyme every so often as the sausages opt and bang, recording number sentences …. your child might also like to make a little mathematical illustrated book of the rhyme.

  • 10-2=8

  • 8-2=6

  • 6-2=4

  • 4-2=2

  • 2-0=2

Home learners:

Why not use some items and objects from within your home environment or garden to show subtraction calculations and then practise writing the number sentences with your child as in the visual examples below:

You could also make a simple bingo game as follows:

Good luck!

Last, but not least, a shout out for Anthony in R/1JH, who has been working so hard on his reading this term and especially over the past two weeks … he’s read two books every day with Mrs Handforth. He is making fantastic progress with his reading and is very proud of himself too. Well done, Anthony!

Last school day of Term 1 for our students tomorrow – a reminder that Monday-Thursday next week are Pupil-Free Days and Friday is a Public Holiday (Good Friday).
