Monday (Term 4 | Week 4)

A very warm welcome to Week 4.

Today we welcomed Miss Catherine Nguyen into R1MP, as Mrs Papillo was undertaking visits to kindergartens to meet next year’s reception intake and their kindy teachers. Mrs Papillo will be back tomorrow.

Yesterday was Liam’s 6th birthday. He told us about his visit to the Cat Cafe in Adelaide. How special!

Shared Reading

Today our Year 1 students shared a lift the flap book by Alison Lester: I’M GREEN AND I’M GRUMPY! Miss Nguyen shared the text with these students.

Mrs Handforth shared a story called There’s a Monster in my House by Stephen Cartwright with the Reception students. It was amazing how well the children picked up on the repetitive refrains in the text, so by the end they were reading the book with the teacher. They helped her to read the BIG AND BOLD words in the text, especially MONSTER! We also looked at the author’s use of ellipsis, as the author used ellipsis immediately prior to each ‘open the flap’. We talked about how this builds up suspense … and we all said ‘dah, dah, dah’ before opening flaps to match the punctuation marks. Mrs Handforth was very impressed with her group today! Well done, Receptions.

Writer’s Workshop

The children worked on authoring their own books. They had the choice of continuing a book they had previously started and incorporating a flap, or they could begin a new ‘lift the flap’ book. Their choice.

Numeracy

We continued to explore number bonds to 10 and 20 utilising ten frames.

Library

Today’s story was Luna Loves Library Day by Joseph Coelho and illustrated by Fiona Lumbers.

Every week Luna looks forward to one special day. The day when she discovers magic among the library shelves. The day she gets to spend with her dad.  Luna loves library day: that’s the day she spends with her dad. Exploring the shelves they find magic, mystery and even start to mend their own history. An inspiring story from one of the UK’s greatest up-and-coming poets for children, captured in all its flights of fancy by newcomer Fiona Lumbers.

Play Investigations

Religion

We shared The Parable of the Lost Sheep. The parable of the lost sheep was told by Jesus when the Pharisees criticized Him for socializing with sinners. Through this story of compassion, Jesus revealed his rescue mission for sinners.

‘Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbours together and says: Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep. I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.’ (Luke 15:3-7)

The children then made some cute sheep using cotton wool. In our next lesson they will be adding their reflections about the parable and what it means for us in our daily lives.
