Thursday’s Home Learning (T4|W6)

Welcome back to online learning everyone!
We hope you are safe and well.

Children, Mrs Papillo and Mrs Handforth are missing seeing your smiling faces and being in class with you all. Meanwhile, we are posting some learning on the blog for you and your parents to enjoy together.

Parents, the literacy learning is intended to cover two days: Thursday and Friday. Otherwise the activities here are for Thursday. We will post again tomorrow and each school day thereafter. Please do email us if you have any specific requests or need any support whatsoever. We will do all we can to help.

Have fun and be sure to send us any pictures of your child and his/her learning. We promise to share them on the blog if you are happy for us to do so.

LITERACY
Reading

Please try to read at least one of your readers each day. If you finish your readers and need new material then the OXFORD OWL website has heaps of free e-books at lots of different reading levels. Parents. you do have to join up to access these, but they are 100% free. Here’s a selection of some of the titles available.

Shared Reading/Viewing

We begin with a focus on meerkats, leading to sharing a text called ‘Meerkat Mail’ with a focus on identifying characters’ feelings and writing about settings.

Reception & Year 1
Look at the picture below and discuss with an adult :

  • Do you know what animal this is?
  • What do they look like? Can you describe one?
  • How do they behave? What do you already know about this animal?
  • What things would you like to know about this animal? Work with an adult to generate some questions that you would like to find the answers to.

Reception
Watch MEERKAT (Animals for Kids)

Watch once all the way through. Repeat watching the clip a second time.

Reception Activity
Time: approx. 40 minutes across Thursday & Friday

  • Did you find the answers to any of your questions?
  • Talk to an adult about what you know now about meerkats.
  • Draw a picture of a meerkat.
  • Label it with information you know/have discovered about meerkats.

Year 1
Watch Kid Reporter Dominique: Meerkats!

Watch once all the way through. Repeat watching the clip a second time.

Year 1 Activity
Time: approx. 50-60 minutes across Thursday and Friday

  • Imagine your family and friends don’t know much about meerkats.
  • Using the information you’ve found, write a simple report for a family member.
  • Just like Dominique, try and use a question and answer sequence in your report.
    For example:
What type of animal is a meerkat? A meerkat is from the mongoose family and is not a cat at all!

What are groups of meerkats called? A group of meerkats is called a mob.
  • Check your sentences make sense by reading them aloud. Check for capital letters, full stops and question marks. Remember to use phonics (sounding out) to help you spell words independently.
  • Share your report with a family member. Either read it to them OR present it to them just like Dominique does.

RECESS | BRAIN BREAK

Choose from one of many fun, exciting brain breaks here.

NUMERACY

Do you remember the story One Is A Snail, Ten is a Crab? Here is the story for you to watch again.  Once you have watched it there are some activities you can choose from to suit your level of understanding.  Ask for help from a family member if needed.  Share your drawings and numbers with a family member and ask them to take a photo and send it to the teachers.  Have fun!

Reception Activities

Year 1 Activities

 PLAY INVESTIGATIONS

Today’s idea was one of Mrs Handforth’s favourites when she was a little girl. She and her sister used to play for hours in bubbles and water.

Mix some dish soap and water in the sink or any large container.

Have endless fun with the bubbles: fill containers and make bubble ice-creams and cups of bubble tea and coffee. Pour water and bubbles from one container to another. Do different shaped containers hold different amounts of water? Can you find any containers that are different shapes but hold a similar amount of bubbly water?

Add a little food colouring to the water for an additional oomph! factor.

LUNCH-TIME

MINDFULNESS

If you feel like a restful and mindful moment take a look at this video for a few minutes.

ART

A choice of two art activities. You decide. Or perhaps you would like to find a tutorial online and draw something you’re interested in. Whatever you choose to draw, we’d love to see a photograph.

CUTE ROBLOX ADOPT ME PUPPY DOG

Create your cute puppy dog and send us a photograph of the picture and we will post it on our blog! I wonder how many different colours we can get?

THE SMILE BEHIND THE MASK
For the next six days if we go outside we have to wear a mask. People still wear smiles underneath their masks.
Have a go at drawing smiles behind masks. Boys and girls, you can make the character look like a girl or a boy or even someone you know. Send us a photograph of the picture and we will post it on our blog!

Here’s Mrs Handforth’s. She is sure some of you talented artists can do just as well, if not better!

WELLBEING IDEAS

At present you may just wish to focus on the wellbeing of your family and your local community. Here’s an uplifting story and an empathy idea to explore.

While we can’t hug ... Hedgehog and Tortoise want to give each other a great big hug, but they are not allowed to touch. A heart-warming story about friendship through tough times to share and make you smile.

Empathy: Thank you cards for others.
An idea to try out with your child:
